Mamba Republic - Auto & General Theatre on the Square

From Wednesday, August 2nd, 2017 to Sunday, August 20th, 2017
Daphne Kuhn by arrangement with Mamba Productions presents Mamba Republic
Written by and starring JOHN VAN DE RUIT and BEN VOSS
Directed by Mervyn McMurtry

They will be back at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square, Sandton from 2nd August to delight audiences with their third production in the Mamba comedy trilogy -  Mamba Republic! The production has just enjoyed sell-out seasons at the Grahamstown’s National Arts Festival and in Durban. The comedy reunites the talents of BEN VOSS (Beauty Ramapelepele) and JOHN VAN DE RUIT (Spud). Mamba Republic takes a savagely funny look at all that is wrong and very wrong in the Rainbow Nation.
With their unique blend of sharp wit, hopeless optimism and clever characterisations, the duo sinks their fangs into the fiascos, farces and foibles of South African life. Whether it is their unique take on fees must fall, state capture, online dating, the economy, sport, technology, racism, an alternative national anthem, or even the most unusual football match in living memory, Mamba Republic will have you rolling in the aisles at the utter absurdity of life at the foot of Africa.
Internationally acclaimed author, van de Ruit said, “Fellow Saffas, you are in for a treat! It has been said before that we, as South Africans, are really good at laughing at the state of our nation. We will be reminding audiences how much there is to laugh at .... and adding a bit of a mamba twist.”
Adding to the duo on stage, the behind the scene team is spear-headed by Durban theatre leader and visionary, Dr Mervyn McMurtry as director and designer. In charge of lighting design is Michael Broderick.
Mamba Republic follows in the footsteps of Green Mamba (2002) and Black Mamba (2005) which together racked up over 800 performances in five years, winning numerous awards and developing a cult following all over Southern Africa.

Freud's Last Session

From Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017 to Saturday, September 16th, 2017
By Marc St Germain

Filled with humanity, humour, and razor-sharp dialogue, FREUD’S LAST SESSION imagines the meeting of two of the 20th century’s greatest academics. On the brink of war in Europe, author and former atheist C.S. Lewis visits the London home of Dr. Sigmund Freud.

Lewis’s recent embrace of Christianity stands in stark contrast to Dr. Freud, whose beliefs are influenced by his life’s work in science. Amidst evacuations and air raid sirens these two legendary scholars debate religion, sex, love, the existence of God, and the meaning of life itself.

Michelle Douglas plays multiple roles in Jane Wagner's one-woman play, a comedic look at and critique of contemporary American society.

The piece takes up themes of the interconnectedness of people and of people’s methods for finding meaning in lives that sometimes seem absurd. The play’s theatricality, and the fact that all of its characters are performed by the same actor, stresses universal human connections.
