Theatre on the Square
The Theatre on the Square officially opened its doors 20 years ago in July 1997. It was dubbed “the life and soul of Sandton” and remains Sandton’s first and only theatre – a popular space that has offered work opportunities to thousands of actors, directors, comedians, musicians and technicians. Its quality work has been acknowledged with numerous awards for theatre excellence. In 2016 it garnered no fewer than 22 nominations and 7 Naledi Awards. Many of its products have travelled world-wide.
In the last two decades, there have been over 1600 innovative theatre productions and concerts presented, drama workshops and youth theatre presentations that are challenging, relevant to the changing environment, educational, thought provoking and entertaining. This was achieved with the objective to enrich and uplift the lives of all, bringing people together crossing cultural divides through a diverse mix of local and international nightly plays, musical theatre, classical music concerts weekly, children’s productions and workshops, comedy shows and jazz showcases. It is also used as a venue for events, product launches, fundraisers and conferences.
